| September 9, 2004 | | The national Council recognizes the Armenian genocide | | ADL Ramgavar | | Bern (AP) - A the instar of 13 other Parliaments in the world, the national Council recognizes the Armenian genocide of 1915. It adopted Tuesday a postulate in this direction and asks the federal Council to take note and to transmit its position of it to Turkey "by the usual diplomatic ways". By the voice of Micheline Calmy-Rey, the federal Council vainly opposed this postulate. Deposited in March 2002 by the former national adviser Jean-Claude Vaudroz (PDC/GE), this postulate was taken again by Domenica de Buman (PDC/FR). It was accepted by 107 votes against 67 and 11 abstentions. The recognition of the Armenian genocide had already been on the agenda at session in Lugano in March 2001. A postulate of Josef Zisyadis (PdT/VD) had been pushed back by 73 votes against 70. It asked the government to recognize the Armenian genocide, which had obstructed several members of Parliament. On the other hand, the Vaudroz postulate invites the national Council, and either the Executive, to achieve this gesture. | | http://adl.hayway.org |
